The district covers an area of just over 55 square kilometers, extending from the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea, bathed by the waters of the Gulf of Follonica, up hilly hinterland where they develop the first foothills of the Metalliferous Hills of Grosseto, in the rear position to the plains of the Maremma, in this stretch formed by the river Sheep to its mouth. A level elevation, it goes from sea level up to 308 meters s.l.m. Poggio al Chiecco.
The municipality is bordered to the north by the town of Suvereto and the province of Livorno, in the north-east by the municipality of Massa Marittima, south-east by the municipality of Scarlino, in the south-west is washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, while at northwest borders again with the province of Livorno and the municipality of Piombino.
The district is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, with more marked along the coastal stretch, which tend to fade gradually proceeding towards the hinterland and climbing in altitude. Follonica has a great tourist tradition.
Starting in the sixties, with the largest population growth, Follonica has started to attract tourists. The natural position, in the center of the gulf, opposite the island of Elba guarantees a safe sea and with a slow slope. Follonica is also the natural outlet to the sea of Arezzo and Siena.
In Summer City it quintupled its people welcoming it as well as tourists that populate the hotels and campsites, the people of holidaymakers who have to Follonica their second home.
Follonica is a holiday destination popular with families, both for the safety of its sea, the pine forests that provide serenity and recreation for the little ones, both for the peace that guarantees Follonica even in midsummer.
Beginning in 2000 and for each subsequent year Follonica has conquered the blue flag of Europe that certifies the high quality of the waters and the coast, the efficiency of the services and security measures, and the high level of environmental education. In the years 2001, 2002 and 2003, Follonica has conquered the 3 sails Legambiente.
From 2004 onwards, Follonica won the 4 sails of Legambiente, which classify it among the first Italian tourist resorts. In 2008 he received the “Blue Plate Award Italy”, international recognition on road safety, which is the establishment of a control system and / or certification in the field of urban mobility.
